Step 1 – Get your unconditional offer and CAS

You must apply to and be accepted by a UK higher education institution that holds a licensed student sponsor status. Once you accept an unconditional offer and pay any required deposits, the university will issue your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number. You need this number to apply.

Step 2 – Check English language requirements

Verify whether you need to take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) like IELTS for UKVI. Some nationalities (majority English-speaking countries) or those with previous UK degree-level qualifications may be exempt.

Step 3 – Prepare proof of financial support

You must prove you have enough money to pay for your first year of course fees and your living costs.

• London: £1,334 per month (for up to 9 months)

• Outside London: £1,023 per month (for up to 9 months) The funds must have been in your bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before you apply.

Step 4 – Check Tuberculosis (TB) testing requirements

Depending on your country of residence, you may need to undergo a TB test at a UKVI-approved clinic and obtain a certificate to include in your application.

Step 5 – Submit your Student Visa application

Apply online via the official UK Gov website. You must apply within 6 months of receiving your CAS. Pay the application fee (£490) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) during this online process.

Step 6 – Prove your identity

As part of the application, you will need to prove your identity. Depending on your nationality and passport type, you will either use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to scan your identity document or attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide your fingerprints and photograph.

If you are studying a sensitive subject at a postgraduate level (typically in science, engineering, or technology), you may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. You must apply for this clearance before submitting your visa application.

Step 9 – Prepare for a UKVI Credibility Interview

After submitting your application, UKVI may randomly invite you to attend a short video interview. You will be asked specific questions about your chosen course, why you selected your university, your career goals, and how you intend to fund your studies.

Step 10 – Complete your Right to Study Check

Once you arrive in the UK, you must finalize your immigration status before you can officially begin classes. This involves either collecting your physical Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from a designated UK Post Office, or generating a digital eVisa ‘Share Code’ to prove your Right to Study to your university’s compliance team.
