Whatever your career or learning goal, there’s a course to help you get there

How to apply for your visa

Step 1 – Conditional or Unconditional Offer

If your university application is successful, you will receive either a Conditional or Unconditional Offer from your chosen UK institution.

  • An Unconditional Offer means you have met all academic and English language requirements.

  • A Conditional Offer means you must still meet specific criteria (such as passing your final exams or an English language test). Read the offer carefully, as it outlines your course details, tuition fees, and the university’s refund policies. Once you meet all conditions, accept the offer and pay the required deposit to secure your place.

Step 2 – Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a unique electronic reference number issued by your UK university after you accept their unconditional offer and pay the required deposit. You cannot apply for a UK Student Visa without a valid CAS. Ensure all details on your CAS statement exactly match your passport and academic transcripts before initiating your visa application.

Step 3 – Proof of English proficiency

UK universities require proof of your English language skills. You must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), such as IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI. This certificate proves you meet the minimum CEFR level required to succeed in your specific degree program.

Step 4 – UKVI Credibility Interview

As part of your UK Student Visa application, you may be required to attend a credibility interview. UKVI officials will ask specific questions to verify you are a genuine student. You must be prepared to discuss why you chose the UK, your specific university, your course modules, your career trajectory, and exactly how you intend to fund your studies.

Step 5 – Maintenance Funds (Financial Requirement)

To secure a UK Student Visa, you must prove you have enough money to support yourself. You must show funds for your first year of tuition, plus maintenance costs for up to 9 months.

Currently, this requires £1,529 per month for courses in London (£13,761 total) or £1,171 per month for courses outside London (£10,539 total). Note: The UK Home Office frequently updates these thresholds, with another scheduled increase coming in late November 2026.

Step 6 – Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

International students in the UK must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) during the visa application. Paying this mandatory surcharge grants you full access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for medical care, hospital visits, and prescriptions during your studies. The current discounted student rate is £776 per year of your visa.

Step 7 – Tuberculosis (TB) Test Requirement

The UK Government mandates that students from specific countries undergo a Tuberculosis (TB) test before applying for a visa. You must be tested at a UKVI-approved clinic. If your chest x-ray is clear, you will receive a TB certificate, which must be submitted alongside your online visa application.

Step 8 – ATAS Certificate and Character Requirements

Depending on your nationality and your course (typically sensitive science and technology subjects at the postgraduate level), you may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. You are also legally required to declare any past criminal convictions during your application to satisfy UKVI character protocols.

Step 9 – Apply Online via GOV.UK

The official platform for all UK Student Visa applications is the GOV.UK portal. You will complete your application, pay the visa fee (currently £558 for applicants outside the UK)  , pay your IHS fee, and then book an appointment at a local visa application centre to submit your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph). You do not legally need an agent to apply, though certified consultants ensure zero paperwork errors.

Step 10 – Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and eVisa

Once approved, you will receive a 90-day entry vignette in your passport. Upon arriving in the UK, you must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or access your digital eVisa. This acts as your legal proof of the right to study and live in the UK. Rules update frequently; always verify the latest requirements on the official GOV.UK Student Visa portal.Stay up to date
